The 48th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 25th June 1913 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh and saw a significant increase in prize money. Subscriptions were 25 sovereigns with a pot of 1265 sovereigns, 75 sovereigns to the second and 25 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned by Sir William E Nelson, bred in Ireland by Joseph Lowry, trained by Henry S Persse at Stockbridge and ridden by Steve Donoghue. The winner won by 1 1/2 lengths in 2 minutes 43 seconds, with 2 lengths between second and third. |

TRAINER PROFILE
Henry Seymour 'Atty' Persse was born in 1869 and began working life as a second lieutenant in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry. He decided to resign his commission on 13th September 1902 to pursue his career as an amateur jockey riding under National Hunt rules in Ireland when he was also Master of Foxhounds, but in 1906 he moved to Stockbridge, Wiltshire and became a racehorse trainer. Although he did not win the Epsom Derby, he won the English 2000 Guineas three times, firstly in 1912 with Sweeper II (SR 1970), again in 1920 with Tetratema (SR 2077), and then in 1929 with Mr Jinks (SR 1951). He also won the English 1000 Guineas in 1922 with Silver Urn (SR 1866). In Ireland he trained the Irish Derby winner twice, initially in 1913 with Bachelors Wedding (SR 1892) and again the next year with Land of Song (SR 1959). After a long, illustrious career he died in 1960 at the age of 91. |
